5 Things to Consider When Organizing a Team-Building Activity
By: Debbie Fletcher
Are you looking to arrange your next team building activity? Team building days are a fantastic way to enhance team bonding and really get to know your employees. There are many benefits to team building, but you need to ensure the day is well-organized in order to reap the benefits. You also need to find an option that all team members feel comfortable with, and ensure that the location is accessible for all.
So, here are five things you need to consider when organizing a team building activity…
Choosing a suitable location
An important consideration is the location of your team building event—is it close to the office or will it require staff to drive or arrange transportation? If so, you will need to make sure that there are good public transport links for team members who may not own a car. If you’re looking to hire space or head to an attraction in a more rural area, you might need to consider either organizing car hire or hiring a coach to transport employees all together to ensure no one misses out. You may also find that heading out is a cheaper option than booking an expensive central hotel.
Think about capacity
When booking your team building activity you need to consider space and numbers. There’s no point booking an activity that ideally suits a group of 8 if you’re a group of 14. It won’t work and will make the day feel unorganized and a bit of a let-down. A team building activity such as an Escape Room is a popular choice and will enable your employees to put their brains together to achieve success. Be aware that many of these rooms have a maximum group number policy so be sure to check this in advance of booking.
Plan your activities
What will your team building activity involve? Will you make a day out of it, or will you simply just organize one activity? You need to pin this down before you start looking for potential options. The first step is to create a plan-of-action including an agenda of what the day or afternoon will look like. Popular team-building activities include archery, inflatable assault courses, chocolate making, sports days and treasure hunts. Let your staff be a part of the decision-making process as some may feel uncomfortable with one or more of the activities.
Prepare for all weathers
Planning an outdoor team building activity? You might want to have a back-up plan just in case the weather isn’t on your side. With the unpredictable weather, you can never quite be sure whether you’ll enjoy brilliant sunshine or torrential rain. Where possible, have a plan B in place just to ensure your day isn’t a complete washout…
Think about food
Before you book your team building activity you will need to check with all employees for any allergies or dietary preferences such as gluten-free, vegetarian or vegan. In most cases, venues will be happy to accommodate but it’s best to confirm this before you book and put down a deposit. If food isn’t included, think about organizing a team lunch to enjoy after your event. It will provide a great opportunity to discuss how the day went and spend time getting to know one another.
Team building is a great morale booster for staff, it will not only make you feel like more of a team, but your employees will feel valued and taken care of. A little preparation and you should be set to have a fantastic day.
